Buckle Up Adalyn: First Track Death of the Season

The first victim of the 2023/24 Tasmanian greyhound racing industry has been revealed.

Buckle Up Adalyn, a three-year old greyhound trained by Gary Johnson, fell on the Launceston track on August 29 2023. She suffered a right humeral ​comminuted fracture. This type of fracture is one that breaks into three or more pieces, and is commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents or ​shooting injuries.

According to the Office of Racing Integrity, she was given an undisclosed pain reliever at the track, and sent for scans shortly after.

Johnson is recorded on GRV’s FastTrack database as delisting as her trainer on August 30th 2023.

Two days after sustaining this catastrophic injury, Buckle Up Adalyn is reported to have died under anesthesia during surgery.

The recording of her final race is not included on the Tasracing website, however we have obtained a copy of the footage showing her tragic fall, ​included below.

Aside from a mention of her fall and the injuries sustained in the steward’s reports from the day, her death has gone entirely unacknowledged.

There are concerns that her death will not be listed as a track or racing death, as it occurred two days later, off the track, and without a registered ​trainer to her name.

This is far from an auspicious start to the dog racing calendar, with one death in the first month and eleven more months for the dogs to survive. And ​once again, a dog has paid the ultimate price for human profits, gambling, and greed.
